Senior Human Resources Generalist
On-site or Hybrid (2-3 days per week on-site)

We are adding this new Sr. HR Generalist position to our Human Resources team at our corporate headquarters located in Cottage Grove, WI, to work closely with the Director of HR, Talent Acquisition Manager, and four HR/TA Team professionals.
The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of human resources experience with 2-3 mid-sized employers (200-1,000 employees) and demonstrated progression in responsibility and expertise, including navigating complex HR issues; overseeing recruitment, benefits, leave and payroll administration; and applying a strong working knowledge of employment laws.
Responsibilities of the Sr. HR Generalist, in collaboration with or as assigned by the Director of HR, will include many of the following:
- Employment Laws: assist in ensuring SMS remains in compliance with Federal, State and other applicable laws; complete required reporting such as EEO-1 and Vets-4212; collaborate with vendor to maintain a Non-discrimination in Employment Plan.
- Employment Policies: help maintain and improve Employee Handbook and other company policies.
- HR Information System (HRIS): serve as a go-to for general system use and report creation; heavy involvement with new system implementation starting soon.
- Recruitment: work with Talent Acquisition Team on job postings, interviews, onboarding, orientation and applicant tracking system (ATS).
- Job Assessment: work with leaders throughout the company to ensure job descriptions remain accurate, including essential functions and physical requirements of those functions.
- Payroll: work with Payroll Specialist to improve efficiency, timeliness and checks-and-balances throughout the processing cycle; serve as back-up to Payroll Specialist.
- Benefits: collaborate with Benefits Specialist to troubleshoot complex issues and to communicate benefit information for greater understanding and appreciation; oversight of Open Enrollment process; work with ESOP vendor on annual census, eligibility and distribution process; maintain knowledge of ERISA requirements; review changes to plan documents.
- Leaves: collaborate with Benefits Specialist to troubleshoot complex issues; ensure all leave-related documents and correspondence are compliant and effective; serve as back-up to Benefits Specialist.
- Performance Management: administer annual performance review process; provide training and support to ensure effectiveness.
- Discipline: serve as back-up to Director of HR in supporting company leaders dealing with performance issues and disciplinary actions.
- Employee Relations: answer questions, investigate concerns/complaints, collaborate with leaders, apply company policies, etc.
- Training and development: participate with implementation of new learning management system (LMS); collaborate with leaders throughout the company on continual improvement of training content.
- Workers Compensation: provide back-up for claim submission and management.
- Unemployment Compensation: provide back-up for responding to requests for information; may represent company at unemployment hearings.
- Credentials: provide back-up for monitoring Team Members’ professional certifications, licenses and other required credentials.
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): ensure all HR department procedures are documented.
In addition to experience with many of the above, we are looking for:
- Intermediate level Excel skills

- Great teamwork attitude with a willingness to get involved with any/all HR areas as needed
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of private and sensitive information
- Ability and willingness to travel out of state and overnight a few times per year

Candidates with supervisory experience and/or demonstrated leadership qualities are encouraged to apply. Although SMS is in the healthcare space, experience in unrelated industries such as construction or manufacturing, especially with a mobile, multi-state workforce would also be a good fit.
